The African Democratic Congress on Tuesday concluded its national convention in Abuja, with delegates voting to amend the party’s constitution despite opposition from the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Party members and stakeholders gathered at the venue where the amendment was adopted, while the National Executive Committee also dissolved the Ralph Nwosu-led National Working Committee and affirmed the leadership of David Mark to take charge of the party’s affairs.
Speaking at the event, Mark described the convention as a major milestone, declaring that it marked the beginning of the party’s push for power ahead of the 2027 elections.
The convention was held amid tensions following INEC’s decision not to monitor the exercise, citing a leadership dispute and a ruling of the Court of Appeal, which led to the removal of Mark and Rauf Aregbesola from its official records.
Despite the development and reported venue challenges, the party proceeded with its congresses and convention, insisting it had fulfilled all legal requirements, including issuing the mandatory notice to the electoral body.
The ADC also announced the expulsion of factional chairman Nafiu Bala, lawmaker Leke Abejide and several others over alleged anti-party activities.
Chieftain of the party, Dino Melaye, said no force could have stopped the convention, citing a valid contract and full payment for the venue despite attempts to disrupt the event.
Similarly, media sub-committee chairman, Kola Ologbondiyan, described the difficulties encountered in securing a venue as “shameful,” alleging that multiple locations withdrew access at the last minute.
Meanwhile, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar accused INEC of undermining democracy, alleging that the electoral body was being used to frustrate opposition activities.
Analysts, including Nduka Odo, said the party’s decision to proceed with the convention signals a renewed stance as an opposition force, while civil society advocate Olu Omotayo urged all parties to allow the courts to resolve the dispute.
The development comes as legal proceedings continue over the party’s leadership crisis, with stakeholders calling for an expedited judicial resolution.
