The caucus of the in the House of Representatives has called for the prosecution and removal of the Chairman of the , , over alleged partisanship and compromised neutrality ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The lawmakers made the demand on Sunday, April 12, 2026, after their inaugural meeting where they reviewed recent political developments and raised concerns about the credibility of the electoral body.
In a resolution issued after the meeting, the caucus accused Amupitan of actions and statements inconsistent with the expectations of an impartial electoral umpire. Although INEC denied any connection between the chairman and the account, the caucus claimed that digital forensic findings and online investigations suggested otherwise, raising questions about his integrity and transparency.
The lawmakers warned that failure to address the allegations could erode public trust and undermine the credibility of the 2027 elections, stressing that the office of the INEC chairman must remain above partisan influence.

Citing Section 83(5) of the Electoral Act 2026, they argued that courts lack jurisdiction over internal party matters and warned against judicial overreach.
The caucus said it would petition the over alleged compromise and misconduct by some judicial officers, calling for investigations and possible sanctions.
They referenced concerns earlier raised by the President of the , , about perceived judicial bias and political influence within the judiciary.
Describing the situation as a threat to Nigeria’s democracy, the caucus urged citizens to safeguard democratic institutions and called for reforms to restore confidence in both the electoral system and the judiciary.
They added that INEC must not only be independent in name but must also demonstrate transparency, credibility and impartiality to maintain public trust.
