CBN Warns Nigerians Over Surge in Fraudulent Messages, Cyber Scams

The Central Bank of Nigeria has alerted the public to a rise in fraudulent messages, emails and online communications aimed at gaining unauthorized access to bank accounts.

The apex bank disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday by its Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Hakama Sidi-Ali.

It said the deceptive messages are designed to mislead recipients, harvest sensitive information and spread false claims about the bank’s leadership and operations.

According to the CBN, the scam messages often urge individuals to click suspicious links and provide confidential details under the guise of official directives.

The bank stressed that its only official website remains www.cbn.gov.ng and advised Nigerians to verify all communications through authorized channels.

It cautioned the public against clicking unverified links or sharing personal and financial information on dubious platforms.

The CBN also urged Nigerians to report suspicious messages, emails and websites to relevant law enforcement agencies.

It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the financial system, noting that efforts are being intensified in collaboration with security agencies to combat cyber fraud.
