Colonel, Seven Soldiers Killed in Boko Haram Attack in Borno

The Commanding Officer of the 242 Battalion in Monguno, Col. I.A. Mohammed, and seven soldiers were killed on April 12 after their vehicle struck an Improvised Explosive Device planted by suspected Boko Haram insurgents in Monguno Local Government Area of Borno State.

The incident occurred late Sunday when the officer was leading a reinforcement mission to assist troops at a Forward Operating Base under attack by insurgents. Military sources said the attackers had launched a coordinated assault on the base, prompting a distress call.

Col. Mohammed was reportedly responding to the call when his vehicle hit the explosive device while approaching the location, resulting in his death alongside six other personnel.

The Media Information Officer of Operation HADIN KAI, Lt. Col. Sani Uba, confirmed the attack, stating that troops of Sector 3 came under an isolated terrorist assault at a location known as Charlie 13 in Monguno. He said troops engaged the attackers in a gun battle and successfully repelled them, maintaining control of the area.

Uba explained that the commanding officer encountered the explosive device while moving to assess the situation after the immediate threat had been contained.

He described the officer’s actions as a demonstration of courage and leadership, noting that he chose to lead from the front despite the risks involved.

The latest incident comes three days after another attack in Benisheikh, Kaga Local Government Area, where Brig. Gen. Oseini Braimah and at least 17 soldiers were killed during an attack on a military formation.

The Joint Task Force expressed deep sorrow over the deaths, stating that the fallen officer and soldiers paid the supreme price in service to the nation and would be remembered for their sacrifice.
