Court Adjourns Judgment in Suit Challenging ADC Leadership to April 14

The Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned judgment in a suit seeking to restrain David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola from parading themselves as Chairman and Secretary of the African Democratic Congress to April 14.

Justice Musa Suleiman Liman shifted the judgment earlier scheduled for April 13 by 24 hours due to official engagements, a court registrar announced on Monday.

The suit was filed by Leke Abejide, a member of the House of Representatives, who is challenging the legality of the party’s current leadership.

Abejide, through his counsel Ibrahim Idris, is seeking among other reliefs, an order nullifying the handover of party leadership by former chairman Ralph Nwosu to Mark and Aregbesola, describing it as unlawful.

He also asked the court to restrain the duo from presenting themselves as party leaders and to stop the Independent National Electoral Commission from recognising them in that capacity.

The defendants, including the ADC, Nwosu, Mark, Aregbesola and INEC, urged the court to dismiss the suit, arguing that Abejide lacks the legal standing to institute the case.

They contended that the matter concerns the internal affairs of a political party, which they said is beyond the jurisdiction of the court.

The defence further maintained that the party’s leadership emerged from a National Executive Committee meeting held on July 29, 2025, contrary to Abejide’s claim.

The court had fixed April 13 for judgment after parties adopted their final arguments, but proceedings were adjourned following the judge’s unavailability.
