A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Monday barred journalists from covering the bail proceedings of six defendants accused of plotting a coup against the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
Operatives of the Department of State Services ordered reporters to vacate the courtroom shortly before the trial judge, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, took her seat, with the directive said to have emanated from the court.
Journalists present complied with the instruction and exited the courtroom as proceedings were about to commence.
The development comes amid heightened public interest in the trial of the six defendants, who were arraigned last Wednesday by the Federal Government over an alleged failed coup.
The defendants include Mohammed Ibrahim Gana, a retired major-general; Erasmus Victor, a retired navy captain; Ahmed Ibrahim, a police inspector; and Zekeri Umoru, an electrician at the Presidential Villa.
Others standing trial are Bukar Goni and Abdulkadir Sani, both Islamic clerics based in Zaria.
The case continues as legal proceedings progress under restricted courtroom access.
