Customs Auctions Seized PMS in Kwara, Intensifies Crackdown on Fuel Smuggling

The Nigeria Customs Service on Wednesday intensified its anti-smuggling operations with the public auction of 43,750 litres of Premium Motor Spirit intercepted along the Niger and Kwara axis.

The National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, Deputy Comptroller Abubakar Aliyu, disclosed this while addressing journalists and stakeholders at the Kwara Area Command in Ilorin.

He said the seizure followed credible intelligence aimed at curbing the diversion of fuel across border communities, noting that operatives intercepted 1,510 jerrycans of 25 litres each and 30 drums of 200 litres, valued at about N43.75 million.

Aliyu explained that the operation covered several flashpoints, including Kaiama, Shiya, Kenu, Boriya, Luma, Bokuru-Baruten, Ilesha-Baruba, Taberu and Salla-Gwanara.

He described fuel smuggling as economic sabotage that undermines national revenue, disrupts supply chains and creates artificial scarcity.

The Customs official commended the Office of the National Security Adviser and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority for their support, as well as the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, for strengthening enforcement efforts.

Aliyu warned smugglers to desist, stressing that security agencies would continue to track and dismantle criminal networks.

He also urged residents of border communities to provide timely and credible information to support enforcement operations.

In his remarks, Acting Customs Area Controller for Kwara Command, Deputy Comptroller Najeem Ogundeyi, commended Operation Whirlwind and partner agencies for their collaboration, urging sustained cooperation to combat illicit trade and promote economic stability.
