FG Appeals to Airlines to Shelve Shutdown Plans Over Jet Fuel Price Hike

The Federal Government has appealed to domestic airlines to suspend planned flight disruptions following the sharp increase in the price of Jet A1 aviation fuel, while also urging operators to reconsider any upward review of airfares.

The appeal was made by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, in a letter addressed to the Airline Operators of Nigeria on Thursday.

He also disclosed that an emergency stakeholders’ meeting had been convened for April 22, 2026, in Abuja to address the rising cost of aviation fuel and other operational challenges facing the sector.

The intervention comes amid threats by airlines to suspend operations next week over the steep rise in Jet A1 prices.

In the letter, Keyamo noted that the price of aviation fuel had increased from about N900 per liter in February 2026 to N3,300 per liter, describing the situation as a major strain on airline operations.

He commended airline operators for their resilience in sustaining air transport services despite difficult economic conditions.

Keyamo said the aviation sector remains a critical national asset under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, adding that ongoing reforms are aimed at supporting local operators and strengthening the industry.

He urged airlines to exercise restraint in adjusting airfares, warning that fare increases would further burden passengers and reduce access to air transport.

The minister also appealed against any suspension of flight operations, noting that such action would disrupt mobility, affect the economy and undermine recent sector reforms.

He assured operators that the Federal Government was giving urgent attention to the concerns raised and working towards a sustainable solution.

Meanwhile, the Airline Operators of Nigeria had described the fuel price increase as “astronomical and artificial,” warning that the situation could threaten the survival of the industry and trigger wider economic disruptions if not urgently addressed.
