FG Approves N548.98bn Demolition, Reconstruction of Carter Bridge in Lagos

The Federal Government has approved the demolition and reconstruction of Carter Bridge in Lagos at a cost of N548.98 billion following findings that the structure has deteriorated beyond repair.

Minister of Works Dave Umahi announced the decision after the Federal Executive Council meeting on Thursday, stating that multiple investigations conducted in 2013, 2019 and under the current administration confirmed that the bridge’s underwater piles and pile caps had failed.

According to the minister, the assessments, carried out with the involvement of engineering firm Julius Berger and other experts, showed progressive structural decay, making total reconstruction the only viable solution.

Umahi said a stakeholders’ engagement involving local and international experts unanimously supported the decision to demolish and rebuild the bridge due to the extent of deterioration.

The reconstruction contract was awarded to CCCC after a competitive bidding process involving Julius Berger, CCECC, CBC and China Harbour High Tech.

He explained that the new bridge will be expanded from its current length of 1.525 kilometres to 1.93 kilometres, with the addition of a flyover ramp aimed at easing persistent traffic congestion. The redesigned structure will also include a navigational waterway measuring 105 metres by two.

Carter Bridge, one of Lagos’s oldest transport links connecting Lagos Island to the mainland, has long faced concerns over its structural integrity due to age, heavy traffic and exposure to a corrosive saltwater environment.

In a related development, the council also approved N24.89 billion for work on underwater elements of the Third Mainland Bridge to be handled by Julius Berger, as part of projects scheduled for commissioning ahead of President Bola Tinubu’s third anniversary in office on May 29.

The planned reconstruction is expected to address longstanding safety concerns and improve traffic flow across the Lagos Lagoon corridor.
