FG Declares May 1 Public Holiday for Workers’ Day

The Federal Government has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, a public holiday to mark this year’s International Workers’ Day.

Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo announced the decision on behalf of the government in a statement issued on Thursday by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Magdalene Ajani.

Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerian workers for their contributions to national development, describing them as vital to the country’s growth and stability.

He commended their dedication and resilience, urging them to remain committed to their responsibilities and uphold values that promote national progress.

“Your hard work and dedication are essential to the nation’s growth and prosperity,” the minister said.

He encouraged workers to embrace patriotism, productivity and diligence, noting that these qualities are critical to sustainable development.

The minister also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare and creating a secure environment that supports economic advancement.

He further urged Nigerians to remain peaceful and law-abiding, calling on citizens to use the occasion to reflect on unity and the role of labour in nation-building.

International Workers’ Day, celebrated annually on May 1, recognises the contributions of workers and the labour movement worldwide.
