The
Federal Government of Nigeria has activated a steering committee to oversee the rollout of a national food support initiative aimed at addressing malnutrition and improving access to nutrition across the country.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on April 12, 2026, by the Federal Ministry of Health, which said the committee held its inaugural meeting in Abuja.
The initiative, known as the National Community Food Bank Programme, is expected to strengthen food and nutrition support systems at the community level across the 774 local government areas.
Speaking at the meeting, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, urged members to prioritise effective implementation, stressing that the programme must deliver tangible benefits for vulnerable Nigerians.
The programme, an initiative of Oluremi Tinubu, will focus on improving nutrition outcomes and reducing vulnerability, particularly among underserved populations.
According to the ministry, the steering committee includes representatives from key government ministries such as humanitarian affairs, agriculture, women affairs and health, alongside relevant agencies, to ensure coordination and monitor progress.
The Federal Government said the programme is scheduled for official launch in Borno State later in April.
