Gunmen Abduct Monarch, Wife in Midnight Raid on Kwara Community
Gunmen suspected to be bandits abducted a traditional ruler, his wife and another resident during a midnight attack on Olayinka community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State on Saturday.
The attackers, who were heavily armed, reportedly stormed the palace of Oba Salman Aweda at about 1:40 a.m., firing gunshots to scare residents before taking the monarch and two others to an unknown destination.
Residents said the incident occurred in the early hours, with one source confirming that the monarch, recently elevated by the state government, was among those kidnapped alongside his wife and another individual. Another resident described the operation as swift and terrifying, noting that no one could confront the assailants due to fear.
The Olora of Ora, Oba Rilwan Yekini, confirmed the attack on Saturday in Ora, describing it as a sign of worsening insecurity in neighbouring communities. He said the abduction followed a similar incident in nearby Odo-Ore days earlier, raising concerns over a pattern of coordinated attacks.
Yekini called on the Federal Government to intervene urgently, stating that local security outfits require more support to curb the rising threat. He expressed confidence that with adequate backing, progress could be made within a short time.
Chairman of Ifelodun Local Government Area, Hadji Abdulrasheed Yusuf, also confirmed the incident and described it as disturbing. He said authorities had launched a joint search and rescue operation involving security agencies, forest guards and local vigilantes across surrounding forests and communities.
Yusuf urged residents to remain calm and support security efforts with credible information, stressing that community cooperation is essential to restoring peace.
The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, said security operatives had intensified efforts to track down the perpetrators. He noted that the kidnappers were in hiding due to ongoing pressure from security forces, while identifying local collaborators as a key challenge.
