INEC Blames Digital Impersonation for Viral Partisan Post Controversy

The Independent National Electoral Commission has said the controversy over alleged partisan social media posts linked to its chairman is a case of digital impersonation targeting the institution.

The commission’s ICT Director, Lawrence Bayode, stated this during an interview on Channels Television on Monday, following the circulation of posts attributed to an account allegedly linked to the chairman, Joash Amupitan.

Bayode said the chairman does not operate any personal X account, noting that any content linked to such accounts is not recognised by the commission.

He warned that the issue reflects a broader threat of misinformation and digital impersonation against public institutions, stressing the need for vigilance and fact-checking in a democratic system.

The controversy originated from a 2023 social media post shared by Dayo Israel, which later resurfaced online alongside claims that an account bearing the chairman’s name interacted with it.

INEC, in a statement issued by its Chief Press Secretary, Adedayo Oketola, described the allegation as false and misleading, insisting that the chairman has never engaged in partisan political commentary.

The commission added that the viral screenshot forms part of a coordinated misinformation campaign aimed at discrediting the electoral body.

INEC also warned that cybercriminals are exploiting fake accounts to mislead the public and said it is working with security agencies to identify those responsible.
