Kwara Govt Approves Statewide Child Rights Training for Schools

The Kwara State Government has approved a statewide Child Rights Training Programme for students and teachers in public and private schools across the state.

The initiative, aimed at strengthening child protection systems and improving awareness of children’s rights in the education sector, will be implemented in phases across the three senatorial districts of the state.

The approval was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by Sterling Human Resource Development & Logistics Limited in Ilorin.

According to the statement, the approval was formally conveyed in a letter dated April 28, 2026, signed by Aina Eunice on behalf of the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Lawal Olohungbebe.

The Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development granted the approval following a proposal submitted on April 9, 2026, by the organisation for a structured child rights intervention programme.

The programme will be carried out in selected schools, both public and private, with phased implementation designed to ensure wide participation and effective engagement of stakeholders.

It will focus on child rights education, safeguarding responsibilities, and response mechanisms for handling violations within school environments.

Teachers are expected to be trained on identifying and addressing cases of abuse, while students will receive orientation on discipline, accountability, and responsible behaviour to promote safer learning environments.

At the end of the training, participants will undergo assessment, with successful candidates to receive certificates of participation.

The organisation said it will fully sponsor the programme and described it as a major step toward strengthening child protection systems in Kwara schools.

Nigeria’s Child Rights Act, enacted in 2003 and domesticated in Kwara State, provides legal protection for children and guarantees their rights to education, healthcare, and protection from abuse, exploitation and harmful practices.
