Makinde Hosts Obasanjo, Atiku, Obi, Others at High-Stakes Summit

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on Saturday hosted a high-level opposition leaders’ summit at the Banquet Hall of the Oyo State Government House in Ibadan, as prominent political figures gathered for talks currently underway ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The summit, themed “That We May Work Together for a United Opposition to Sustain Our Democracy,” is being chaired by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, with Makinde serving as host.

In attendance are former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, and former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, among others.

Also present are former Senate President David Mark, elder statesman Jerry Gana, and political economist Pat Utomi, reflecting a broad spectrum of opposition stakeholders.

Organisers said the summit is a response to Nigeria’s prevailing socio-economic and security challenges, with discussions expected to focus on building consensus among opposition leaders and strengthening democratic institutions. The gathering is also aimed at fostering collaboration across party lines and exploring pathways to a more united opposition front.

Sources indicate that key issues on the agenda include economic reforms, national security, electoral strategy, and the need for cohesive leadership capable of presenting a credible alternative in 2027.

Security has been heightened across parts of Ibadan as the summit progresses, underscoring the importance of the meeting and the calibre of participants.

Although deliberations are still ongoing and no official communiqué has been released, political observers believe the outcome of the summit could significantly influence coalition-building efforts and shape the trajectory of opposition politics in the run-up to the next general elections.
