Makinde to Reveal Preferred 2027 Governorship Candidate by Early May
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has announced that he will publicly name his preferred candidate for the 2027 governorship election before the end of the first week of May.
The governor made this known on Saturday through a newsletter, stating that he has been consulting widely with elders, religious leaders, and key stakeholders across the state as part of the decision making process.
He noted that several aspirants have already emerged as frontrunners, although he has not disclosed his preferred choice.
Makinde emphasized that reports suggesting he had already endorsed a candidate were false, adding that he remains mindful of the weight of the decision.
According to him, the consultations are nearing completion and a final decision will soon be communicated to the public.
Sources within the Peoples Democratic Party indicated that a screening committee set up by the governor has been interviewing aspirants since late March. Among those identified as leading contenders are Nureni Adeniran, Segun Ogunwuyi, Taofeek Arapaja, Adebo Ogundoyin, and Adedeji Stanley Olajide.
On the issue of political platform, the governor said he is awaiting a Supreme Court ruling concerning the Peoples Democratic Party before making a final decision on the platform his preferred candidate will use to contest.
The announcement comes amid growing political activity ahead of the 2027 governorship race in Oyo State, with recent allegations and counterclaims involving political figures adding to the tension. Both Makinde and other key actors have dismissed claims of internal plots and described them as baseless.
