Makinde Urges Oyo Residents to Reject Religious Politics Ahead of 2027 Election

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has urged residents to avoid religious sentiments when choosing leaders ahead of the 2027 governorship election, insisting that competence and performance should guide political decisions.

Makinde made the appeal on Wednesday during the farewell ceremony for the state’s 2026 Hajj pilgrims in Ibadan, where he cautioned against attempts to introduce religious considerations into the state’s political succession.

He said while some individuals had suggested that the next governor of Oyo State should emerge on the basis of religion, such an approach would not serve the interests of the state.

“People have come to me, saying the next governor should be a Muslim, but Oyo State must not go that route,” the governor said.

He stressed that leadership selection should be based on vision, capacity, and commitment to development rather than religious identity.

Makinde added that at the appropriate time, he would provide relevant facts to guide public discussion on the matter, while urging citizens to pray for a progressive-minded leader.

The governor also maintained that Oyo State’s political history has consistently reflected inclusiveness, noting that past elections were decided on broader considerations rather than religious affiliation.

He called on residents to sustain the state’s tradition of peaceful coexistence and mutual respect, warning against factors that could divide the population.

During the event, Makinde also approved two buses for the Oyo State Pilgrims Welfare Board to support transportation of pilgrims within Nigeria and Saudi Arabia during Hajj operations.

He encouraged intending pilgrims to use the Hajj period to pray for peace, unity and stability in the state and the country as the 2027 election season approaches.
