Makinde made the appeal on Saturday at an opposition leaders’ summit held in Ibadan, organised to strengthen coordination among political parties ahead of future elections.
The event, held at the Banquet Hall of the Oyo State Government House, brought together leaders from the Peoples Democratic Party, African Democratic Congress, New Nigeria Peoples Party and other political groups.
The governor said the meeting was not intended to promote division or confrontation but to encourage responsible political engagement across party lines in the interest of national development.
He warned that if opposition parties fail to remain strong, the consequences would be borne collectively by the country’s democracy.
Makinde stressed that the objective of the gathering was to encourage clear thinking, honest dialogue and responsible political conduct that transcends party interests.
He noted that Nigeria’s socio-economic and security challenges require cooperation among political actors rather than fragmentation or disengagement.
The governor added that sustaining meaningful dialogue among opposition groups was necessary to address national issues and promote stability.
The summit, themed “That We May Work Together for a United Opposition to Sustain Our Democracy,” was described by organisers as a response to growing concerns over governance, security and economic pressures in the country.
