NAF Launches Probe Into Alleged Accidental Bombing of Border Market
The Nigerian Air Force on Sunday ordered an immediate investigation into reports that a military airstrike accidentally hit a weekly market in Jilli along the Borno–Yobe border, killing dozens of civilians and injuring others.
The directive was issued by the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, following reports that at least 56 people, mostly traders, were feared dead while 14 others were hospitalised after the incident, which reportedly occurred on Saturday, April 11, 2026.
In a statement released in response to enquiries, the NAF spokesman, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, confirmed that a fact-finding team had been deployed to the area to determine the circumstances surrounding the strike. He stated that the Air Force had taken note of the reports alleging that the operation may have affected civilians at the market.
Ejodame said the service treats all cases of possible civilian harm with seriousness and empathy, noting that the protection of innocent lives remains central to its operations. He added that the Civilian Harm Accident and Investigation Cell had been activated to carry out an on-the-ground assessment.
The Air Force also called for calm, urging the public and media to avoid speculation while the investigation is ongoing. It assured citizens of its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and transparency, and pledged to work with relevant authorities and community representatives to establish the facts.
The incident is under review as authorities seek to determine how the strike occurred and its full impact on the affected community.
