NBC Warns Broadcasters Over Code Violations, Threatens Sanctions

The National Broadcasting Commission has warned television broadcasters and anchors in Nigeria over alleged breaches of the Nigerian Broadcasting Code, stating that strict compliance will now be enforced.

The warning was issued on Friday in a notice to media organisations following what the commission described as a rise in unprofessional conduct across news broadcast platforms.

The commission directed stations including Arise Television and Channels Television to adhere strictly to provisions of the code, particularly those concerning fairness, balance, accuracy, hate speech, incitement, and respect for constitutional institutions.

It stressed that broadcasters must maintain professionalism when covering sensitive topics such as politics, communal conflicts, and war related issues.

The NBC also warned that sanctions would be imposed on presenters found guilty of presenting personal opinions as facts, intimidating guests, denying opposing views a fair hearing, compromising neutrality, or acting in ways that undermine human dignity.
