NCAA Urges Airlines to Provide Accurate Information on Flight Delays

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority has called on airlines to improve transparency in communicating flight delays, particularly when disruptions arise from operational challenges.

The directive was issued on Tuesday in a statement by the agency’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, via his X handle.

Achimugu urged airlines to provide passengers with accurate reasons for delays, stressing that travellers have the right to make informed decisions about their journeys.

He warned against issuing misleading updates, especially in cases involving fuelling issues, and cautioned airlines not to give false assurances that could keep passengers waiting for extended periods.

According to him, prolonged delays and last-minute cancellations can disrupt the plans of various categories of travellers, including government officials, students and business passengers.

He disclosed that the Director-General of Civil Aviation, Chris Najomo, has directed closer monitoring of airline operations by consumer protection officers to address the issue.

Achimugu added that while delays may not always be the fault of airlines, operators have a responsibility to minimise inconvenience by providing timely and accurate information, allowing passengers to explore alternative travel options.

The NCAA also advised airlines to provide stranded passengers with necessary support, including hotel accommodation where required, in line with consumer protection regulations.
