NDC Urges Obi, Kwankwaso to Join Party Ahead of 2027 Presidential Election

ABUJA — The Nigeria Democratic Congress has called on Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso to defect to its platform and contest the 2027 presidential election, giving both politicians about two weeks to secure its presidential ticket before the deadline.

The party made the appeal in a post on X on Sunday, stating that their entry into the party is urgently needed as preparations intensify ahead of the next general election.

“All we need right now. Just all we need. Two weeks to deadline,” the party said, accompanying the message with a photo of Obi and Kwankwaso shaking hands and a caption expressing optimism about Nigeria’s future.

The development follows the recent launch of the “OK Movement” by supporters of the two politicians, aimed at mobilising backing for a possible joint presidential bid in 2027. The group’s spokesperson, Justin Ijeh, also announced new appointments into its national and state structures.

Meanwhile, the African Democratic Congress, the party to which both Obi and Kwankwaso currently belong, is grappling with internal leadership disputes that may affect its electoral prospects.

On April 22, the Supreme Court reserved judgement in a case involving factions led by David Mark and Nafiu Bala, further deepening uncertainty within the party.

In a related development, the Independent National Electoral Commission has fixed May 30, 2026, as the deadline for political parties to submit membership lists and nominate candidates for the election.

Opposition parties, including the ADC, a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, and the New Nigeria Peoples Party, have called on the electoral body to extend the deadline to the end of July, citing concerns that the current timetable is not favourable.
