The Oyo State Government has confirmed a case of Lassa fever at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, involving a 44-year-old female patient who died on April 11, 2026.
Laboratory confirmation of the disease was received on April 13, prompting the state to activate emergency response measures.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, disclosed this in a statement, noting that the state had placed its Incident Management System for Lassa fever on alert to coordinate response efforts.
She said authorities had begun contact tracing and monitoring of all individuals linked to the deceased, while arrangements were being made for a safe and dignified burial.
Ajetunmobi urged residents to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as persistent fever, weakness, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhoea, unexplained bleeding, chest pain or difficulty breathing.
She explained that Lassa fever is a viral haemorrhagic disease transmitted mainly through contact with food or household items contaminated by infected rodents, as well as through bodily fluids of infected persons.
The commissioner advised residents to maintain proper hygiene, store food in rodent-proof containers, dispose of waste appropriately, and block entry points in homes to prevent rodent infestation.
She also urged regular hand washing and the use of sanitisers, adding that anyone with symptoms should report through emergency lines provided by the state.
According to her, surveillance has been intensified and health facilities placed on high alert, while health workers have been directed to adhere strictly to infection prevention and control measures.
Ajetunmobi assured residents that the situation is under control and urged calm, noting that Lassa fever is preventable and treatable when detected early.
