The Oyo State Government has introduced free evening classes for children unable to attend school during the day due to work, with the programme set to begin on April 27, 2026, across major markets in Ibadan.
The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Olusegun Olayiwola, disclosed this during a press briefing in Ibadan, stating that the initiative is designed to provide flexible learning opportunities for children engaged in low-income or menial activities.
According to him, the pilot phase will run from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., covering three market clusters: Mokola and Sabo, Bodija, and Agbeni with Idi-kan.
He said designated centres for the programme include St. Brigid’s Primary School in Mokola for children in the Sabo and Mokola axis, St. Patrick’s Basic School in Idi-kan for those in Agbeni and nearby areas, and Methodist Primary School in Bodija for children within Bodija and its environs.
Olayiwola said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that every school-age child has access to basic education, noting that alternative learning pathways are being created to accommodate children who cannot attend regular classes.
He urged parents, guardians, traders and community leaders to support the programme by encouraging affected children to participate.
Also speaking, the Director of Basic Education, Susan Oladipo, said awareness campaigns have commenced across the selected markets to ensure the programme reaches its target audience.
She added that members of the State Steering Committee on Almajiri and Out-of-School Children are conducting sensitisation visits, while market leaders have pledged support in identifying vulnerable children and promoting their enrolment.
The initiative is part of the state government’s broader effort to reduce the number of out-of-school children and expand access to education across Oyo State.
