Security Agencies Tighten Measures Over Alleged Terror Plot in Abuja, Niger

Security agencies have reinforced protection around key facilities in Abuja and neighbouring Niger State following intelligence reports of a suspected insurgent plot targeting an airport and correctional centres.

The Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Immigration Service and Nigeria Correctional Service confirmed on Thursday that security had been strengthened at airports and custodial facilities in response to the threat.

The move follows an internal memo from the Nigeria Customs Service, which revealed plans by terrorist groups to attack the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Kuje Custodial Centre in the Federal Capital Territory and a prison facility in Niger State.

The memo, dated April 13, 2026, indicated that the planned attacks involve fighters linked to ISWAP, Boko Haram, Ansaru and Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimeen, with additional targets including a military detention facility in Wawa, Niger State.

According to the document, suspected insurgents have already infiltrated the FCT as part of preparations to carry out coordinated attacks aimed at freeing detained fighters.

In response, the Customs Service directed heightened surveillance, stricter screening of visitors and deployment of specialised intelligence units to vulnerable locations.

Spokesperson for the Airport Police Command, Adeola Muhammed, said the command had intensified security architecture at the airport, assuring that multiple layers of screening and intelligence gathering were in place to detect and prevent threats.

He added that collaboration among security agencies had enhanced response capacity and ensured preparedness for any emerging risk.

The Immigration Service also confirmed heightened security measures across its facilities in the FCT, with its spokesperson, Akinsola Akinlabi, noting that relevant agencies, including the police and military, were actively addressing the situation.

Similarly, the Nigerian Correctional Service said custodial centres nationwide had been placed on high alert, particularly in Abuja, assuring the public that proactive steps had been taken to secure facilities.

Its spokesperson, Jane Osuji, urged Nigerians to remain calm and continue their lawful activities without fear.

A security analyst, Chidi Omeje, called on authorities to act decisively on intelligence reports, warning that failure to do so in the past had led to avoidable security breaches.

He stressed the need for proactive countermeasures and improved communication to address ongoing security concerns.
