Supreme Court Ends PDP Leadership Crisis, Voids Ibadan Convention
The Supreme Court has nullified the national convention held by the Peoples Democratic Party in Ibadan, Ibadan, on November 15 and 16, 2025.
The convention had produced a factional leadership led by Tanimu Turaki.
The exercise had been mired in legal disputes, as it was conducted despite subsisting court orders restraining the party from proceeding. A Federal High Court had earlier barred the convention over breaches of the party’s constitution and failure to follow due process, including unresolved issues from state congresses and the exclusion of some aspirants.
The Court of Appeal upheld the ruling, maintaining that the convention violated valid judicial orders and that its outcome could not stand.
Dissatisfied, the Turaki-led faction approached the apex court to validate the exercise and its leadership. However, in its final judgment, the Supreme Court affirmed the lower courts’ decisions, effectively voiding the convention and nullifying the executives produced.
The ruling brings an end to the prolonged legal battle over the legitimacy of the factional leadership within the party.
