17 ADC Reps Defect to NDC, One to APC
Seventeen members of the House of Representatives on Tuesday defected from the African Democratic Congress to the National Democratic Congress, while one lawmaker moved to the All Progressives Congress, citing internal crises within the ADC.
The defections were announced during plenary as the affected lawmakers submitted separate letters on the floor of the House, pointing to unresolved disputes within the party at various levels as the reason for their exit.
The lawmakers, drawn from Kano, Anambra, Lagos, Edo and Rivers states, said the instability within the ADC had limited their ability to function effectively and serve their constituents.
Yusuf Umar Datti, representing Kura, Madobi and Garun Mallam Federal Constituency of Kano State, said the party crisis had affected his legislative performance. Harris Okonkwo, who represents Idemili North and Idemili South Federal Constituency of Anambra State, said his decision followed consultations with stakeholders and constituents.
Others who defected to the NDC include Sani Adamu, Thaddeus Attah, Deputy Minority Whip George Ozodinobi, Lilian Obiageli, OluwaSeyi Sowunmi, Peter Anekwe, Zakari Umar Mukhtari, George Olawande, Murphy Osaro Omoruyi, Umezuruike Manuchim, Emeka Idu, Jesse Onuakalusi, Ifeanyi Uzokwe, Afam Ogene and Kamilu Ado.
In a related development, Leke Abejide, representing Yagba Federal Constituency, defected from the ADC to the All Progressives Congress.
The Speaker acknowledged the defections and wished the lawmakers well in line with parliamentary tradition.
Some lawmakers expressed concern over the growing trend of political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, noting that party instability remains a key factor driving defections in the National Assembly. The development is expected to reshape the balance of power among minority parties and weaken the ADC’s presence in the House.
