2027: Adelabu Supporters Protest APC Consensus Move, Demand Direct Primaries
Supporters of former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, on Thursday staged a protest at the Oyo State secretariat of the All Progressives Congress, demanding the adoption of direct primaries for the selection of the party’s governorship candidate ahead of the 2027 elections.
The protesters insisted that only a transparent primary process would ensure fairness in choosing the party’s flagbearer in Oyo State.
Adelabu, who resigned from his ministerial position last month to pursue his governorship ambition, had formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 Oyo State governorship election on May 12, 2026.
His supporters’ protest comes amid growing internal tension within the APC in Oyo State following moves by party leaders and stakeholders to endorse Senator Sharafadeen Alli as the consensus governorship candidate ahead of the primaries.
The endorsement of Alli was reaffirmed on Wednesday during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Emeritus Professor Theophilus Ogunlesi Hall, University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.
Party stakeholders at the meeting reportedly backed the consensus arrangement, setting the stage for a possible clash over the mode of primary election within the party.
The development highlights rising internal divisions within the APC in Oyo State as aspirants and their supporters jostle for the party’s governorship ticket ahead of 2027.
