2027: Federal Might Will Not Work, Nigerians Will Decide — Makinde

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde on Thursday declared that federal might would not determine the outcome of the 2027 general elections, expressing confidence that Nigerians would vote for leaders of their choice regardless of political influence.

Makinde stated this while speaking at the Oyo State Tourism Summit held at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, Ibadan.

The governor said Nigerians were becoming more politically conscious and would no longer remain passive observers during elections.

“I believe that this election cycle, federal might will not work. It has worked in Ekiti State in both instances but this time around, Nigerians will show politicians pepper,” he said.

“They will show us that they don’t want to be bystanders anymore; they will participate, and I’m sure of what I’m saying.”

Speaking on succession plans after the expiration of his tenure, Makinde said his administration had established structures that would ensure continuity in governance across the state.

He explained that although he would recommend a preferred successor, the people of Oyo State would ultimately decide who becomes the next governor.

“I tell people that I will recommend for Oyo State people, but the decision will rest with the people of Oyo State,” the governor said.

Makinde, however, warned against electing a leader without the required capacity to govern, noting that poor leadership decisions could have long-term consequences for the state.

“But if you make a mistake and bring someone who will not do good work, it is a one-day event, but the impact will last four years,” he added.

“So, we must get it right. Leadership changes but systems, they endure. So, our focus has been deliberate.”

There have been speculations that Makinde may support former Commissioner for Finance, Bimbo Adekanmbi, as his preferred governorship candidate ahead of the 2027 election.

The speculation gained momentum after the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, disclosed that he led lawmakers in the state to a strategic breakfast meeting with Adekanmbi, whom he described as the consensus governorship candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement in the state.

Responding to the speculations, Makinde said his support would be based on loyalty to Oyo State and competence rather than political party affiliation.

“People said, ‘Oh, so Seyi, you did not mentor anyone these seven years you have been in government that can take over from you without the taint of APC?’ And I ask them that Morohunkola Thomas or Bimbo Adekanmbi, are they not from Oyo State?” he said.

“For us, if you’re from Oyo State, loyal to Oyo State, and have capacity, we will support you. We are blind to party colouration but open to capacity that can move Oyo State forward.”

The governor added that the state had moved beyond identifying opportunities and was now focused on building systems capable of sustaining long-term growth and development.
