2027: Jonathan Remains PDP Member, Turaki-Led Faction Clarifies

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, has declared that former President Goodluck Jonathan remains a member of the party despite campaign posters linking him to other political parties ahead of the 2027 elections.

The faction made the clarification in a statement issued on Saturday by its spokesperson, Ini Ememobong.

According to the statement, Jonathan recently participated in the PDP digital membership registration exercise and personally completed his registration in his ward.

The group dismissed campaign posters circulating on social media portraying the former president as a candidate of other political parties, describing the materials as false and misleading.

It stated that some of the posters presented Jonathan as a presidential candidate, while others paired him with different politicians as running mates.

The faction maintained that Jonathan remains a duly registered member of the PDP under the Turaki-led leadership and disclosed that the former president reaffirmed his membership status during a recent meeting with the party’s interim National Working Committee.

The statement noted that the clarification became necessary because Nigerian law prohibits individuals from belonging to more than one political party at the same time.

The group also alleged that some persons could attempt to secretly register Jonathan and other politicians in multiple political parties without their consent.

It therefore urged the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and the public to disregard any campaign materials or alleged registration records associating Jonathan with any political party outside the PDP.
