ADC Faction Picks Chris Uba as Presidential Candidate for 2027

A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by its factional National Chairman, Nafiu Bala, has declared businessman Chris Uba as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.

The faction also presented flags to 29 governorship candidates from the six geopolitical zones during a ceremony held in Abuja on Sunday.

Speaking at the event, Bala said the faction zoned its presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria in line with the principles of equity, fairness, inclusiveness and federal character.

According to him, three aspirants initially purchased the party's Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for the presidential race. They included Bashir Sani, Williams Charles and Chris Uba.

Bala explained that the faction adopted the consensus option provided under the Electoral Act, leading to Uba's emergence as the sole presidential candidate after the withdrawal of the two other aspirants.

He said the decision was taken in accordance with Section 84(2) of the Electoral Act, which recognises consensus as a lawful method for the nomination of candidates by political parties.

According to him, the two aspirants voluntarily stepped down and endorsed Uba in the interest of party unity, paving the way for his adoption as the faction's consensus candidate for the 2027 presidential election.

The development comes barely a week after former Vice President Atiku Abubakar emerged as the presidential candidate of another wing of the ADC after defeating former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi and former banker Mohammed Hayatu-Deen in a primary election.

The emergence of separate presidential candidates further underscores the leadership crisis and internal divisions currently facing the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
