ADC Names Imoke, Ahmed to Lead Presidential Primary Committees

The African Democratic Congress has appointed former Cross River State Governor, Liyel Imoke, and former Kwara State Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed, to lead key committees for its forthcoming presidential primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to a statement issued on Monday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, Imoke will chair the Presidential Screening Committee, while Ahmed will head the Presidential Election Committee.

The statement said Hon. C.I.D. Maduabum will serve as Secretary of the Presidential Screening Committee, alongside members including Alhaji Lawal Batagarawa, Prof. Bode Ayorinde, Hon. Nnena Elendu-Ukeje, Prof. David Salifu and Col. Abubakar Ali Ciroma.

The Presidential Election Committee will have Prof. Yisa Gana as Secretary, while members include Maj.-Gen. Adamu Jalingo, Dr Auwalu Anwar, Chief Emenike Ikechi, Dr Macaulay Iyare, Tajudeen Bakare, Elder Ubolo Itodo Okpanachi, Zainab Buba Galadima, Uzoamaka Onyeama and Maj.-Gen Muhammad Inuwa Idris.

The party also constituted a Presidential Appeals Committee chaired by Suleiman Usman, with Barr. Ken Imasuagbon serving as Secretary and Barr. Dare Okerade as member.

For the governorship primaries, the ADC set up two screening panels. The first panel is chaired by S.E. Aruwa, SAN, with Femi Olawuyi as Secretary. Members include Lauretta Onochie, Chief Vivian Ugochukwu, Akilu Indabawa, Ibrahim Mohammed Wali and Prof. Rabiu Bello.

The second governorship screening panel is chaired by Barr. Justina Abanida, with Hon. Chille Igbawua as Secretary. Other members are Gerrard Irona, Sen. Yisa Braimoh, Hassan Mohammed Ibrahim, Joseph Ephraim Enemali and Navy Capt. Aliyu Ngolmo.

The ADC also approved two Governorship Appeal Committees. The first is chaired by P.I. Oyewole, with Abdulhakeem Taiye Ibrahim as Secretary and Adah Usman as member. The second committee is headed by M.E. Sheriff, with Barr. Realwan Okpanachi serving as Secretary and Barr. Hassan Yakubu as member.

The party said the committees were constituted to guarantee transparency, fairness, credibility and internal democracy during the conduct of the primaries.

Meanwhile, the ADC disclosed that it had postponed its screening exercise for presidential and governorship aspirants to Monday, May 18, 2026, due to security concerns affecting parts of northern Nigeria.

The party said screenings for affected federal lawmakers’ aspirants would now hold in Abuja, adding that all aspirants would be contacted with updated schedules and relevant details.

Speaking with Tribune Online, Abdullahi revealed that more than 796 aspirants had obtained nomination forms on the party’s platform.

According to him, over 120 aspirants are contesting for Senate seats, while some states have up to six governorship aspirants.

He added that three aspirants are seeking the ADC presidential ticket, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and economist Mohammed Hayatu-Deen.

The party scheduled its presidential primary election for May 23, 2026. This will be followed by a National Executive Committee meeting on May 25 and a Special National Convention on May 26, 2026.

Primary elections for State Houses of Assembly, the House of Representatives and the Senate are expected to hold on May 21, while governorship primaries are scheduled for May 22, 2026.

The party added that appeals will be heard between May 18 and 19, while the final list of cleared aspirants will be published on May 20, 2026.
