ADC Says Supreme Court Ruling Clears Path for 2027 Poll Preparations

The African Democratic Congress has said the recent Supreme Court ruling has removed key obstacles to its participation in preparations for the 2027 general elections.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, stated this on Friday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Morning Brief, noting that the judgment lifted constraints that had stalled its political activities.

Abdullahi said the ruling addressed issues arising from earlier court decisions that affected the party’s leadership, adding that it corrected what he described as a misapplication of a Court of Appeal order.

According to him, the Supreme Court decision has effectively restored the party’s recognition and its ability to function, particularly in organising primaries and engaging in the electoral process.

He said the judgment also removed the basis upon which actions were taken that altered the party’s leadership structure, noting that the electoral body had begun to make necessary corrections.

The ADC spokesman, however, acknowledged that the party still faces ongoing legal battles, especially with matters pending before the Federal High Court, but expressed confidence in its position.

He maintained that decisions taken by the current leadership under David Mark remain valid and cannot be invalidated, insisting that there would be no vacuum in the party’s structure.

Abdullahi also criticised a separate Federal High Court judgment on the party’s state congresses, describing it as flawed and subject to further legal challenge.

He stressed that the ADC remains committed to pursuing all lawful avenues to defend its position, while reaffirming its readiness for a prolonged legal contest.

Abdullahi added that the party views the Supreme Court ruling as an opportunity to re-engage fully in the political process, while continuing efforts to protect democratic principles and ensure credible opposition ahead of the 2027 elections.
