A governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, on Thursday rejected the outcome of the party’s gubernatorial primary election, alleging widespread irregularities and voter intimidation across the state.
Adelabu made the allegation while addressing journalists after the conclusion of the exercise at IMG School, Ward 9, in Ibadan South-East Local Government Area.
The former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria claimed that the primary election was manipulated in several wards, with voting allegedly conducted before the arrival of party members and results written in advance.
According to him, many of his supporters were denied the opportunity to vote, while others were allegedly intimidated and violently chased away from polling centres.
He further alleged that no voting took place in some wards despite the announcement of results.
Adelabu described the conduct of the primary as a violation of democratic principles and accused some party executives of undermining the process through the alleged imposition of candidates.
He maintained that the directive from the party leadership in Abuja was for a transparent direct primary election that would give all aspirants equal opportunity to contest.
The APC chieftain also faulted what he described as the adoption of “consensus candidates” in some wards, insisting that no agreement on consensus arrangement had been reached among aspirants.
He warned that the alleged irregularities could affect the credibility of the exercise and vowed to submit petitions to the appropriate authorities for investigation.
Adelabu called for disciplinary action against individuals allegedly involved in the misconduct, including party officials and aspirants accused of benefiting from the process.
He said democracy must guarantee every party member the right to freely choose candidates without intimidation, exclusion or manipulation.
Despite his protest, Adelabu secured victory at Ward 9 in Ibadan South-East Local Government Area, polling 430 votes to defeat Senator Sharafadeen Alli, who scored three votes.
