APC Clears 53 Aspirants, Disqualifies 105 in Kwara Assembly Race

The All Progressives Congress has disqualified 105 aspirants from contesting for its ticket in the 2027 Kwara State House of Assembly election following the conclusion of a screening exercise conducted by the party in Ilorin.

Results released on Thursday at the APC state secretariat showed that only 53 of the 158 aspirants who obtained nomination forms were cleared to proceed to the next stage of the selection process.

Several serving lawmakers seeking second and third terms were among those denied clearance by the screening committee, a development that has stirred tension among party members and supporters across the state.

In Kwara Central Senatorial District, all incumbent lawmakers seeking re-election were cleared except the representative of Alanamu/Ajikobi Constituency, Hon. Ayishat Tundun Alanamu, whose name appeared on the list of unsuccessful aspirants.

The exercise recorded heavier casualties in Kwara South Senatorial District, where multiple lawmakers failed the screening. Among them were Hon. Ganiyu Folabi Salahu of Omupo Constituency and Hon. Owolabi Olatunde Rasaq of Share/Oke-Ode Constituency, both from Ifelodun Local Government Area.

Also screened out were Hon. Bamigboye Joseph, representing Oke-Ero Constituency, Hon. Omotosho Olakunle Rasaq of Isin Constituency, and Hon. Yusuf Abdulwaheed Gbenga of Essa/Shawo/Igboidun Constituency.

However, the Deputy Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Hon. Ojo Olayiwola Oyebode, alongside other lawmakers from Oyun Local Government Area, secured clearance to seek another term.

In Kwara North Senatorial District, lawmakers from Moro Local Government Area who applied for re-election were successfully cleared by the panel.

The member representing Edu Constituency, Hon. Issa Gideon, was also denied clearance. Gideon is currently under suspension by the Assembly over allegations of misconduct and actions considered damaging to the image of the legislature.

Two lawmakers did not participate in the race for another term in the Assembly. They are the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Danladi-Salihu, and Hon. Ganiyu Gabriel, who represents Ekiti Constituency.

Danladi-Salihu is reportedly pursuing the APC governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 election cycle, while Gabriel is said to be seeking a seat in the House of Representatives for the Ekiti/Isin/Irepodun/Oke-Ero Federal Constituency.

Speaking ahead of the screening exercise, the chairman of the committee, Prof. Success Musa, described the large number of aspirants as a reflection of the party’s growing acceptance in Kwara State.

According to him, the participation of 158 aspirants in the House of Assembly contest demonstrated internal democracy and confidence in the APC leadership within the state.

The Kwara State House of Assembly has 24 members representing constituencies across the 16 local government areas of the state.
