Atiku Demands Release of El-Rufai, Condemns Detention as Unjust

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on federal authorities under President Bola Tinubu to immediately release former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, describing his continued detention as unjust and politically troubling.

The call was contained in a statement issued by Atiku’s spokesperson, Phrank Shaibu, who criticised El-Rufai’s detention as an abuse of state power and a violation of civil liberties.

Atiku said the situation was especially concerning as Muslims across Nigeria prepared for Eid al-Kabir celebrations, adding that denying a citizen liberty without just cause undermines democratic principles and the rule of law.

He argued that El-Rufai’s continued detention raises concerns about political persecution and selective justice, warning that such actions weaken public trust in democratic institutions.

According to him, every citizen is entitled to constitutional protections, including the rights to dignity, liberty, and due process, regardless of political differences or affiliations.

Atiku further stated that the credibility of any democracy depends on how it treats political opponents, not only loyal supporters.

El-Rufai has been in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, over undisclosed allegations, and had reportedly filed for bail which was opposed by the agency in court.
