Court Clears Jonathan to Contest 2027 Presidential Election
A Federal High Court in Abuja has cleared former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest in the 2027 presidential election.
Justice Peter Lifu delivered the ruling on Tuesday, holding that Jonathan remains eligible to participate in the presidential race despite a suit challenging his qualification.
The case was filed by Johnmary Jideobi, who sought an order restraining the former president from presenting himself as a candidate for the 2027 election under any political party.
The plaintiff also asked the court to stop the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, from accepting, processing or publishing Jonathan’s name as a presidential candidate, arguing that provisions of the 1999 Constitution disqualify him from seeking the office again.
Jideobi urged the court to interpret Sections 1(1), 1(2), 1(3) and 137(3) of the Constitution to determine Jonathan’s eligibility for another presidential bid.
However, Justice Lifu ruled that the former president could lawfully contest the election.
The development comes days after a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, reportedly offered Jonathan a waiver as the party’s sole presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general election.
