FG Should Stop Misleading Nigerians on State Police — Makinde

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde has urged the Federal Government to stop what he described as misleading Nigerians over the proposed establishment of state police, insisting that the continued debate on the issue had become a waste of time.

Makinde spoke at a joint mega rally of the Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Movement in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, where he reiterated the need for decentralised policing to address growing insecurity across the country.

The governor said the South-West governors had previously pushed for the creation of state police but resorted to establishing the regional security outfit, Amotekun, in 2020 after the proposal failed to gain federal approval.

“We wanted state police. It was because we couldn’t get the state police that we established Amotekun as a stop-gap,” Makinde said. “They should stop wasting Nigerians’ time.”

Makinde explained that the South-West states were able to create Amotekun by coordinating their various Houses of Assembly to legalise the outfit without waiting for approval from federal authorities or the police hierarchy.

He, however, noted that Lagos State did not join the initiative, alleging that the decision was influenced by President Bola Tinubu, who was a dominant political figure in the state at the time.

“The only state that didn’t create Amotekun is Lagos State, and we know it is because their boss didn’t want Amotekun,” the governor stated.

Makinde maintained that state policing could be implemented within a short period if there was sufficient political will, stressing that insecurity remained a major national challenge requiring urgent localised intervention.
