The Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, on Tuesday directed Commissioners of Police to conduct an immediate and comprehensive audit of arms and ammunition across all state commands to strengthen accountability and prevent misuse.
Disu gave the order in Abuja at an emergency conference with CPs, stressing that the exercise must be thorough, transparent and properly documented, with detailed reports submitted to the Force Headquarters.
He said the audit is aimed at identifying gaps, ensuring proper accountability of weapons and providing an accurate assessment of the operational needs of the Nigeria Police Force.
According to him, the directive is a critical step to enhance operational readiness and ensure that all assets are effectively managed and deployed.
The IGP also announced reforms in the force’s operational structure, including the reorganisation of the Special Weapons and Tactics units into the Violent Crime Response Unit.
He said the new unit represents a shift in tackling serious crimes, with officers receiving specialised training in tactical operations, intelligence analysis, human rights compliance and rules of engagement.
Disu added that the unit would operate strictly on credible intelligence and be subject to structured oversight, with Commissioners of Police responsible for its conduct and performance in their respective states.
He further directed CPs to formally inaugurate the unit in their commands with the involvement of community leaders, traditional rulers, religious figures and the media.
