JAMB Exempts Education, Agriculture Candidates From UTME Requirement

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has announced that candidates seeking admission into Education programmes and Agriculture-related non-engineering courses will no longer be required to sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME.

The Board made the announcement in a post shared on its official X handle on Monday during its ongoing policy meeting on admissions.

“Candidates seeking admissions into Education Programmes and Agriculture non-Engineering Courses are now exempted from UTME,” JAMB stated.

The development represents a major adjustment to Nigeria’s tertiary admission process, as the UTME has traditionally served as the standard entry examination for universities, polytechnics and colleges of education across the country.

JAMB’s annual policy meeting is usually convened to determine admission guidelines, including cut-off marks and other requirements for tertiary institutions.

While exemptions from the UTME have previously applied to Direct Entry candidates and a few special categories, the latest decision extends waivers to a broader group of applicants in education and agriculture-related fields.

The move is expected to create alternative admission pathways, with institutions likely to rely more on internal screening processes and other academic qualifications.

Education and agriculture-related courses have generally recorded lower cut-off marks compared to competitive disciplines such as Medicine, Law and Engineering.

The Board is also expected to conclude deliberations on the 2026 UTME cut-off marks during the ongoing policy meeting.
