Jonathan Pays Tribute to Yar’Adua, Marks 16th Anniversary of His Death

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has paid tribute to late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua on the 16th anniversary of his death, describing him as a servant leader remembered for humility, integrity and commitment to justice.

Jonathan made this known in a statement shared on his Facebook page on Tuesday, reflecting on his time serving as vice president under Yar’Adua.

He described the late leader as a selfless patriot and trusted partner, noting that their administration was guided by a shared vision of building an inclusive and just nation rooted in the rule of law.

According to Jonathan, Yar’Adua demonstrated rare humility in leadership and consistently placed national interest above personal or political considerations.

He said the former president’s approach to governance, particularly in peace building, remains a reference point for leadership in Nigeria.

Jonathan added that Yar’Adua believed strongly in democratic principles and the sanctity of the ballot, stressing that the strength of any nation lies in its adherence to the rule of law.

He urged current leaders to draw lessons from Yar’Adua’s life, emphasising that leadership should be anchored on accountability, transparency and service to the people.

The former president also called on Nigerians to recommit to the ideals of unity, justice and good governance exemplified by the late leader.

Yar’Adua was sworn in as Nigeria’s president on May 29, 2007, and served until his death on May 5, 2010 after a prolonged illness.
