Jonathan Says 2027 Presidency ‘Not a Computer Game’ Amid Calls to Contest

 Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday said contesting Nigeria’s presidency is “not a computer game” as he responded to calls by youth groups urging him to run in the 2027 presidential election.

Jonathan spoke in Abuja while receiving members of youth groups who visited his office to persuade him to return to the presidential race.

Responding to the appeal, the former president said he would consult widely before making any decision, stressing that leadership requires careful consideration and broad engagement.

“You are asking me to come and contest the next election. Presidential race is not a computer game. But I’ve heard you and I’ll consult widely,” he said.

Jonathan commended the youths for showing interest in national affairs, describing patriotism and active participation as critical to nation-building.

He also urged young Nigerians to promote peace and credible elections, warning that the absence of transparent electoral processes discourages competent citizens from participating in politics.

According to him, peaceful and credible elections remain essential for strengthening democracy and encouraging wider political participation.

The former president further expressed concern over Nigeria’s low voter turnout, describing it as one of the poorest among countries where he has observed elections.

Jonathan called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to investigate the causes of voter apathy and improve participation in future elections.

He also challenged young Nigerians to participate actively in the electoral process by obtaining voter cards and voting during elections.

The former president lamented the negative perception of Nigerians abroad, attributing the situation partly to leadership failures over the years.

Jonathan, however, maintained that he had only listened to the appeal by the youth groups and would continue consultations before deciding whether to join the 2027 presidential race.

The Federal Government has announced that the traditional khaki uniform of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, will be replaced with Adire fabric as part of ongoing reforms aimed at repositioning the scheme and promoting local production.
