Kwara APC Assures Credible Guber Primary After Postponement
The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Governorship Primary Election Committee for Kwara State, Musiliu Obanikoro, has assured party members and stakeholders of a free, fair and transparent governorship primary scheduled to hold today across the state.
The assurance followed the postponement of the APC governorship primary in Kwara after party leaders failed to secure a consensus arrangement among aspirants ahead of the earlier date fixed for Thursday.
The APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, had announced on Thursday that the governorship primaries in Kwara and Bauchi states were rescheduled for Friday, while the State House of Assembly primaries for Maradun I and Maradun II constituencies in Zamfara State were shifted to Sunday, May 24.
Speaking on preparations for the Kwara exercise, Obanikoro said election materials would be distributed before Juma’at prayers, while voting would commence simultaneously across the 16 local government areas afterward.
According to him, designated Local Government Election Officers appointed by the committee would oversee the distribution of materials and conduct of the exercise in their respective councils.
“The committee is fully prepared to conduct the exercise in strict compliance with the directives of the APC National Headquarters and in accordance with established party guidelines,” Obanikoro said in a statement issued Friday morning.
He disclosed that the committee had earlier met with all governorship aspirants at the APC State Secretariat in Ilorin to brief them on the modalities for the election and address concerns raised by stakeholders.
Obanikoro said the engagement was aimed at ensuring an inclusive and transparent process ahead of the primary.
He added that although efforts were made to achieve consensus among the aspirants, the committee remained prepared to conduct a credible election if no agreement was reached.
“The committee is the only body duly authorised by the party and relevant laws to conduct, conclude and report on the primary,” he stated.
He urged party members and supporters to remain peaceful and conduct themselves responsibly during the exercise.
Meanwhile, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq had earlier endorsed Yahaya Seriki as his preferred aspirant for the governorship ticket.
There were also reports that several aspirants, including Prof. Wale Sulaiman, Dr Mohammed Bio, Dr Toyin Alabi, Senator Ibrahim Oloriegbe, Captain Ahmad Mahmoud, Hajia Aisha Patigi, Dr Salako Oluwatoyin and Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Yakubu Danladi-Salihu, had withdrawn from the race.
However, supporters of aspirants including Yahaya Seriki, Senator Saliu Mustapha, Bashir Bolarinwa and Femi Sanni were seen mobilising at Adewole Ward in Ilorin West Local Government Area on Thursday ahead of the primary.
