The Kwara State Government has warned residents against indiscriminate dumping of refuse on road medians and other unauthorized locations, saying the practice poses serious environmental and health risks capable of triggering disease outbreaks.
The warning was issued on Friday by the Commissioner for Environment, Nafisat Buge, through a statement released by the Ministry’s Press Secretary, Muritala Shakirat.
The commissioner said the renewed enforcement exercise followed a review of reports submitted by environmental health officers and members of the ministry’s task force, aimed at improving sanitation and protecting public health across the state.
She noted that officials had intensified monitoring within Ilorin metropolis, focusing on indiscriminate waste disposal and noise pollution.
According to her, enforcement teams had sealed at least two facilities over excessive noise levels and arrested six persons caught dumping refuse on road medians.
Buge explained that indiscriminate waste disposal remained a major environmental challenge that could block drainage systems, cause flooding, contaminate surroundings, and expose residents to health hazards.
She warned that offenders would face the full weight of environmental laws, stressing that the government would not tolerate actions that undermine public safety and environmental sustainability.
The commissioner also urged residents to comply with existing environmental regulations, including permissible noise levels, particularly during night hours.
She added that the warning was especially important during the festive period, when increased social activities could lead to higher levels of environmental violations.
The Kwara State Government reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a cleaner and safer environment, calling on residents to cooperate with authorities in sustaining sanitation efforts across the state.
