The Peoples Democratic Party faction aligned with Oyo State Governor
Seyi Makinde has dismissed comments by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory,
Nyesom Wike, insisting that its primaries and national convention will proceed as scheduled.
The group said Wike cannot assume the role of national leader of the party, stressing that no such position exists within its constitutional structure.
The position was made known on Wednesday in a statement issued by Ini Ememobong on behalf of the interim leadership headed by Kabiru Turaki.
According to the statement, the dispute reflects an ongoing struggle for control of the party ahead of the 2027 elections, with the Makinde-backed bloc affirming its authority and confirming that the sale of nomination forms is already underway.
The party criticised Wike’s recent media chat, describing it as inappropriate, and called on the minister to apologise to Nigerians over his remarks.
It also urged individuals allegedly defamed in Wike’s comments to seek legal redress, maintaining that no one is above the law.
The faction further dismissed threats attributed to Wike regarding disruption of party activities, including banking operations, insisting that its processes remain intact and functional.
On legal matters raised by the minister, the party said it is awaiting certified true copies of relevant court judgments and challenged him to clarify the basis of his claims.
The interim leadership maintained that no amount of pressure would derail its planned primaries and convention, expressing confidence that the process will produce its presidential candidate.
