Makinde Reaffirms Workers’ Welfare, Tackles Insecurity, Poverty

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on Friday said his administration’s policies are focused on improving workers’ welfare while addressing insecurity and poverty in the state.

Makinde made the statement during the 2026 Workers Day celebration held at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex in Ibadan, where he was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Musbau Babatunde.

He described the theme of the celebration, “Insecurity and Poverty: Threats to a Conducive Work Environment,” as timely, noting that both challenges continue to undermine productivity and workers’ morale.

According to the governor, insecurity disrupts livelihoods, delays projects and discourages investment, while poverty erodes the dignity of labour and weakens commitment to service.

He said his administration had taken proactive steps to address the challenges, including the establishment and strengthening of the Amotekun Security Network to complement conventional security agencies.

Makinde added that the government has also provided logistics, patrol vehicles and communication equipment to security agencies, alongside improved coordination among the Police, Armed Forces and other services to enhance intelligence sharing and rapid response.

The governor maintained that a secure environment is essential for productivity, stressing that his administration remains committed to building a conducive atmosphere for workers.

He highlighted prompt payment of salaries and pensions, implementation of the national minimum wage, clearance of promotion arrears and leave bonuses, as well as the introduction of a N10,000 monthly transport bonus as part of measures to support workers.

Makinde urged workers to remain disciplined, committed and innovative, while rejecting corruption and embracing excellence in service delivery.

In their separate remarks, the state chairmen of the Trade Union Congress and the Nigeria Labour Congress, Bosun Olabiyi Agoro and Martins Kayode, called on the government to intensify efforts in tackling insecurity and poverty.

Olabiyi Agoro said workers are grappling with rising fuel prices and inflation, while Kayode commended the state government for its response to workers’ welfare and urged it to make the transport bonus permanent.

The event featured a march past by affiliates of the Trade Union Congress and Nigeria Labour Congress.
