NCoS Destroys 1,167 Seized Phones, Warns Against Contraband Smuggling

The Nigerian Correctional Service on Tuesday destroyed 1,167 mobile phones and other prohibited items recovered from custodial centres across the country as part of efforts to curb illicit activities in correctional facilities.

Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, said the items were seized over the past eight months and included smartphones, SIM cards, chargers, earpieces and other unauthorised materials found within custodial centres.

He said the destruction was necessary because such items compromise security, undermine discipline and enable criminal activities to be coordinated from within custody.

According to him, a total of 1,167 mobile phones, including Android devices, iPhones and button phones, were destroyed alongside other recovered items.

Nwakuche also disclosed that ₦2.57 million in cash seized during operations had been remitted to government coffers in line with financial regulations.

He revealed that 147 personnel of the service had been sanctioned for various offences, including involvement in smuggling contraband into custodial centres, stressing that accountability within the system is now strictly enforced.

He added that some external collaborators arrested in connection with smuggling operations have been handed over to the Nigeria Police Force and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for prosecution, with several already facing trial.

The Controller General said a special crack team had been deployed to strengthen intelligence gathering, surveillance and enforcement across custodial centres nationwide.

He warned staff and members of the public against aiding contraband smuggling, saying anyone found culpable would face strict sanctions in line with the law and service regulations.
