Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has been cleared to contest in the presidential primary of the Nigeria Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general election.
Chairman of the party’s National Screening Committee, Sam Egwu, announced Obi’s clearance in a video shared on the party’s official X account on Wednesday following the screening exercise conducted in Abuja on Tuesday.
Egwu said the committee was satisfied that Obi met all constitutional and statutory requirements needed to contest for the presidency under the platform of the party.
According to him, the former Anambra State governor complied with the provisions of the party’s constitution, the Electoral Act and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, while also providing satisfactory responses to questions raised by the screening panel.
Reacting through his official X account, Obi disclosed that the screening process lasted more than two and a half hours, during which members of the committee examined his credentials and questioned him on his vision for Nigeria.
He said the committee reviewed documents including his academic certificates, National Youth Service Corps credentials and age declarations before clearing him for the race and issuing him the presidential nomination form he had purchased.
Obi also commended the screening committee and the party leadership for conducting what he described as a transparent and credible exercise.
The development comes amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general election, with opposition parties intensifying consultations, coalition talks and preparations for their primaries.
