The Oyo State Government has introduced a daily environmental sanitation monitoring and enforcement system to promote a cleaner and healthier environment across the state.
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, announced the initiative on Tuesday in Ibadan during a press briefing to mark his first 100 days in office.
He said the new system replaces the traditional monthly sanitation exercise with a proactive approach that makes residents responsible for cleanliness on a daily basis.
According to him, environmental health officers have been deployed across the state to ensure continuous monitoring and enforcement of the policy.
Aderinto said the government has re engaged 930 environmental vanguards, sweepers and waste packers, and procured two compactor trucks to improve waste evacuation.
He added that sanitation personnel have been restructured to enhance coverage, with sweepers now working twice daily to keep roads clean.
The commissioner disclosed that the workers have also been enrolled in the Oyo State Health Insurance Scheme.
To encourage public participation, he said the ministry launched the Oyo Soro Soke Environmental Whistleblower platform, which allows residents to report violations through mobile applications and WhatsApp.
He further stated that the government has introduced waste segregation in public offices and initiated partnerships for the construction of modern public toilets.
Aderinto noted that the ministry has also strengthened public awareness through regular advisories on environmental and public health issues, including flooding, heat waves, cholera and Lassa fever.
He added that efforts have been intensified to curb open defecation, regulate charcoal production and improve disease prevention through environmental monitoring.
The commissioner expressed appreciation to Governor Seyi Makinde and members of the state executive council for their support, assuring that the government will sustain the initiative.
