Oyo Insecurity: APC Slams Makinde, Demands Resignation

The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised Governor Seyi Makinde over his comments on insecurity in the state, accusing him of misrepresenting the constitutional responsibilities of governors and failing to take ownership of security challenges confronting residents.

In a statement issued on Sunday by its spokesman, Olawale Sadare, the opposition party faulted Makinde's claim that his ability to address insecurity is limited because security agencies are under the control of the Federal Government.

The APC described the governor's remarks as evidence of "cluelessness, insincerity and criminal ineptitude," insisting that he cannot evade responsibility for the worsening security situation in Oyo State.

According to the party, Makinde's comments amounted to an attempt to shift blame at a time when residents expect decisive leadership and practical measures to tackle insecurity.

The party also called on the governor to resign from office, arguing that if he believes he lacks the authority to protect lives and property, he should allow his deputy to complete the remainder of the administration's tenure.

"Parochial leaders like Makinde pose a grave danger to the growth and development of the Nigerian society, and it is important for the electorate to avoid them in future elections," the statement read.

The APC's reaction followed remarks attributed to Makinde during his acceptance speech as the presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) in Ibadan on Saturday. During the event, the governor reportedly lamented that there was little he could do to rescue kidnapped schoolchildren and other victims because he lacked direct control over security agencies.

Makinde had maintained that governors do not exercise absolute authority over the nation's security architecture, a position strongly rejected by the APC, which argued that state chief executives still have significant responsibilities in coordinating security efforts within their jurisdictions.
